![]() ![]() Direct-connection chess and IRC chess is a bit more difficult and takes a little familiarity with the internet in general. For IRC chess you first connect to an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) server and look for a chat room, usually called #chess. Then, you join in the chat and meet others to play. You must know your IP (Internet Protocol) address before you can begin playing. You either host the game (so that they will connect to your IP address) or you will connect to their IP address, after sharing it in the chat room. You can also do this on a network that supports TCP/IP, which includes the Internet. By knowing your IP address and your opponents IP address you can play using any direct-connect program that uses TCP/IP. However, most people are assigned a different address whenever they connect. The best way to meet and play friends on-line this way is to agree beforehand on a time and date, send an email to your opponent telling them your current IP address. Then they connect to you and play. BuddyChess is a new program that integrates with ICQ so you can play your friends on-line through ICQ! Check the link below to get it and start playing! You can also use it by entering your opponents IP address and connecting that way. Windows95 users can find their IP address by clicking on the Start button, then choosing Run and typing in winipcfg and press enter. This will display a lot of TCP/IP information including your IP address. IRC Chess Links:
